Multiply and divide integers

Key Notes:

  • Integers include:
    Positive whole numbers (1, 2, 3…)
    Negative whole numbers (–1, –2, –3…)
    Zero (0)

Rules for Multiplication:

Integer 1Integer 2Result Sign
Positive × PositivePositive (+)
Negative × NegativePositive (+)
Positive × NegativeNegative (–)
Negative × PositiveNegative (–)

Remember:

  • Same signs → Positive (+)
  • Different signs → Negative (–)

  1. (+6) × (+4) = +24
  2. (–3) × (–7) = +21
  3. (–5) × (+2) = –10
  4. (+8) × (–6) = –48

Rules for Division:

(Same as multiplication!)

Integer 1Integer 2Result Sign
Positive ÷ PositivePositive (+)
Negative ÷ NegativePositive (+)
Positive ÷ NegativeNegative (–)
Negative ÷ PositiveNegative (–)

  1. (+20) ÷ (+5) = +4
  2. (–36) ÷ (–6) = +6
  3. (+18) ÷ (–3) = –6
  4. (–24) ÷ (+4) = –6

  • Zero × Any number = 0
  • 0 ÷ Any non-zero number = 0
  • You cannot divide any number by zero! (Undefined)

Multiply:

  1. –4 × 5 = ______
  2. –3 × –6 = ______
  3. 7 × –2 = ______
  4. –8 × –1 = ______
  5. –9 × 0 = ______

Divide:

  1. –24 ÷ 6 = ______
  2. –36 ÷ –6 = ______
  3. 40 ÷ –5 = ______
  4. –45 ÷ 9 = ______
  5. 0 ÷ 7 = ______

  1. –20
  2. 18
  3. –14
  4. 8
  5. 0
  6. –4
  7. 6
  8. –8
  9. –5
  10. 0

  • Multiplying/dividing same signs = Positive
  • Multiplying/dividing different signs = Negative
  • Always follow the rules first, then do the calculation.
  • Practice daily to gain confidence!
