Divide decimals
key notes :
1. Understanding Decimal Division
- Decimal division is similar to regular division, but involves decimal numbers.
- To divide decimals, it’s important to understand the place value of digits after the decimal point.
2. Steps to Divide Decimals
- Step 1: If the divisor (the number you’re dividing by) is a decimal, move the decimal point to the right in both the divisor and the dividend (the number you’re dividing). Do this until the divisor becomes a whole number.
- Step 2: After making the divisor a whole number, divide the numbers just as you would with whole numbers.
- Step 3: Place the decimal point in the quotient (the answer) directly above the decimal point in the dividend.
3. Example:
- Example 1:
3.6÷0.2
Step 1: Make 0.2 a whole number by multiplying both the divisor and the dividend by 10.
3.6×10=36
0.2×10=2
Now, divide 36÷2=18. - Example 2:
4.5÷1.5
Step 1: Make both numbers whole by multiplying by 10.
4.5×10=45
1.5×10=15
Now, divide 45÷15=3.
4. Dealing with Remainders
- If the division doesn’t go evenly, continue the division by adding zeroes to the dividend after the decimal point and dividing until the remainder becomes zero or the desired precision is achieved.
