Identify and correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense

key notes :

๐Ÿ“ Identify and Correct Inappropriate Shifts in Verb Tense โณโœ๏ธ

Verb tense tells us when an action happens: past, present, or future.

Sometimes, writers shift tenses inappropriately, which can make sentences confusing. We need to identify and correct these shifts.

Occurs when the tense changes unnecessarily in a sentence or paragraph.

Makes the time of action unclear.

Example:

  • โŒ She was walking to school and finds a wallet.
  • โœ… She was walking to school and found a wallet. โœ…
TenseExampleEmoji
PastI played football yesterday.โšฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ
PresentI play football every day.โšฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ“…
FutureI will play football tomorrow.โšฝ๏ธโžก๏ธ
  • Look at all verbs in the sentence.
  • Ask: Do all verbs show the same time? โณ
  • If not, check if the change is necessary.

Example:

  • โŒ He eats breakfast and went to school.
  • โœ… He ate breakfast and went to school. โœ…

Mixing past and present

  • โŒ She walks to the park and saw a bird.
  • โœ… She walked to the park and saw a bird.

Shifting unnecessarily in narrative

  • โŒ Yesterday, I went to the market and buy some fruits.
  • โœ… Yesterday, I went to the market and bought some fruits.

Switching future and present

  • โŒ I will call you when I am free.
  • โœ… I will call you when I am free. โœ… (here itโ€™s correct because the present tense โ€œamโ€ is okay after โ€œwhenโ€ for future reference)

Decide the main tense for your sentence or paragraph.

Change all other verbs to match the main tense unless a shift is needed.

Example:

  • โŒ I am reading a book and walked to the library.
  • โœ… I was reading a book and walked to the library. โœ…
  • Past narrative โ†’ keep all verbs in past.
  • Present narrative โ†’ keep all verbs in present.
  • Future narrative โ†’ keep all verbs in future.
  • Past โณ = ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ yesterday
  • Present โฐ = ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ today
  • Future ๐Ÿ”ฎ = ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธโžก๏ธ tomorrow
