Form and use comparative and superlative adjectives

Key Notes :

Form and Use of Comparative & Superlative Adjectives ✨📚

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.

Example:

  • The 🌟sun🌟 is bright.
  • She is a happy girl 😊.

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two things.

Formation Rules:

1. For short adjectives (1 syllable): add -er

  • tall → taller 🏀
  • fast → faster 🏎️

2. If the adjective ends with “y”: change y → i and add -er

  • happy → happier 😊

3. For longer adjectives (2 or more syllables): use more + adjective

  • beautiful → more beautiful 🌸
  • expensive → more expensive 💰

Examples:

  • My bag is bigger than yours 🎒
  • This puzzle is more difficult than the last one 🧩

Key Signal Words: than, compared to

Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more things, showing the highest degree.

Formation Rules:

1. For short adjectives (1 syllable): add -est

  • tall → tallest 🏆
  • fast → fastest 🏎️

2. If the adjective ends with “y”: change y → i and add -est

  • happy → happiest 😊

3. For longer adjectives (2 or more syllables): use most + adjective

  • beautiful → most beautiful 🌸
  • expensive → most expensive 💰

Examples:

  • He is the tallest in the class 🏫
  • This is the most interesting book I’ve read 📖

Key Signal Words: the, in, of all

Some adjectives do not follow normal rules:

AdjectiveComparativeSuperlative
good 👍betterbest
bad 👎worseworst
far 🌍fartherfarthest
little 🐣lessleast

Example:

  • She is a better singer than her sister 🎤
  • That is the worst day ever ☔
  • Use -er / -est for short adjectives
  • Use more / most for long adjectives
  • Watch for irregular adjectives
  • Always check what you are comparing: 2 things → comparative, 3+ things → superlative
  • 🐶 Dog 1: small, Dog 2: smaller → Dog 2 is smaller
  • 🍎 Apple 1: sweet, Apple 2: sweeter → Apple 2 is sweeter
  • 🏔️ Mountain 1, 2, 3: high → This is the highest mountain 🏔️
