📝 Identify Appositives & Appositive Phrases

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames or gives more information about another noun.

💡 Example:

  • My brother, a talented musician, plays the guitar. 🎸
Here, “a talented musician” is the appositive, giving more info about my brother.

An appositive phrase is a group of words that includes an appositive and gives more details about a noun.

💡 Example:

  • The Eiffel Tower, a famous landmark in Paris, attracts millions of tourists. 🗼
Here, “a famous landmark in Paris” is the appositive phrase giving extra info about The Eiffel Tower.
  • Usually placed right after the noun it describes.
  • Can be set off by commas, especially if extra info is not essential.

💡 Example:

  • Sarah, my best friend, is coming to the party. 🎉
  • The novel “Harry Potter” is my favorite book. 📖
TypeExample

Ask yourself:

  • Does this word or phrase rename a noun? 🔍
  • Does it add extra information? 📝

💡 Examples:

  • The painting, a masterpiece by Picasso, is on display. 🎨
  • My dog Max loves to play fetch. 🐶
  • Appositives usually answer who? or what? about a noun.
  • Non-essential appositives always have commas around them.
  • Essential appositives do not use commas.

Identify the appositive in each sentence:

  • My uncle, a famous chef, is visiting us. 🍲
  • The book “Charlotte’s Web” is on the shelf. 📚
  • Our teacher, Mr. Kumar, loves science experiments. 🔬
  • The city Mumbai is very crowded. 🌆
