📝 Form and Use Plurals: Review

A plural shows that there is more than one of something.

Usually, we add -s or -es to make a word plural.

Example:

  • Book → Books 📚
  • Box → Boxes 📦

🔹 Most nouns

Just add -s

Example:

  • Cat → Cats 🐱
  • Dog → Dogs 🐶

🔹 Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z, -ch, -sh

Add -es

Example:

  • Bus → Buses 🚌
  • Brush → Brushes 🖌️

🔹 Nouns ending in consonant + y

Change y → i and add -es

Example:

  • Baby → Babies 👶
  • Party → Parties 🎉

🔹 Nouns ending in vowel + y

Just add -s

Example:

  • Toy → Toys 🧸
  • Key → Keys 🔑

🔹 Nouns ending in f or fe

Change f/fe → v + es

Example:

  • Leaf → Leaves 🍃
  • Knife → Knives 🔪

❗ Some just add -s: Roof → Roofs 🏠

🔹 Irregular Plurals

Some nouns do not follow rules

Examples:

  • Man → Men 👨
  • Woman → Women 👩
  • Child → Children 👶
  • Mouse → Mice 🐭
  • Tooth → Teeth 🦷

Plural nouns match with plural verbs

Example:

  • The cats are sleeping 🐱😴
  • The books were on the table 📚

Unchanging nouns: Same in singular and plural

  • Deer → Deer 🦌
  • Fish → Fish 🐟

Compound nouns: Pluralize the main word

  • Mother-in-law → Mothers-in-law 👩‍👩‍👧
  • Look at the last letter of the word.
  • Check if the word is regular or irregular.
  • Always match plural nouns with plural verbs.
  • Practice makes perfect! ✨

Let’s practice!✒️
