Key Notes:

Form the Singular or Plural Possessive

Used when one person or thing owns something.

Rule: Add an apostrophe + s (’s) to the singular noun.

Formula:

Singular noun + ’s = singular possessive

Examples:

  • The girl’s 🎀 dress is red. (The dress belongs to the girl)
  • My dog’s 🐶 toy is under the bed. (The toy belongs to the dog)
  • Teacher’s ✏️ book is on the table. (The book belongs to the teacher)

💡 Tip: Even if a singular noun ends in s, we usually add ’s.

  • Example: James’s 📖 bag is heavy.

Used when more than one person or thing owns something.

Rule:

  • If the plural noun ends in s, just add an apostrophe (’)
  • If the plural noun does NOT end in s, add ’s

Examples:

1. Plural noun ends in s:

  • The dogs’ 🐕 toys are in the yard. (Toys of many dogs)
  • The students’ 🎓 books are on the desk. (Books of many students)

2. Plural noun does not end in s:

  • The children’s 🧸 playground is new.
  • The men’s 👔 jackets are on sale.

💡 Tip: Look carefully if the noun is singular or plural before adding the apostrophe!
