The percent of change formula can be used to find percent of mark-up.

percent of mark-up = selling price = purchase price / purchase price

Plug ₹50 and ₹62 into the formula and simplify.

percent of mark-up = selling price = purchase price / purchase price

= ₹62 – ₹50 / ₹50

= ₹12 / ₹50

= 0.24

Write the number as a percent.

0.24 → 24%

The percent of mark-up is 24%.

▶️ Lexi, the owner of an e-commerce site, buys shovels for ₹300 and then sells them on her site for ₹861. What is the mark-up, as a percentage?

The percent of change formula can be used to find percent of mark-up.

percent of mark-up = selling price = purchase price / purchase price

Plug ₹300 and ₹861 into the formula and simplify.

percent of mark-up = selling price = purchase price / purchase price

= ₹861 − ₹300 / ₹300

= ₹561 / ₹300

= 1.87

Write the number as a percent.

1.87 → 187%

The percent of mark-up is 187%.

▶️ A store manager decides to clear out fishing poles to make room for new inventory. Now a ₹850 fishing pole will be on sale for only ₹442. What percentage is the discount?

The percent of change formula can be used to find percent of discount.

percent of discount = original price − discount price / original price

Plug ₹850 and ₹442 into the formula and simplify.

percent of discount = original price − discount price / original price

= ₹850 − ₹442 / ₹850

= ₹408 / ₹850

= 0.48

Write the number as a percent.

0.48 → 48%

The percentage of discount is 48%.
