Learn with an example
▶️ A store priced a golf club at ₹4,875 and later marked it down 20 percent. Today, a salesperson named Brenda sold the golf club, earning a 9% commission on the sale price. How much commission did Brenda make?
₹_______
First find the discount price. Write 20% as the decimal 0.20 before using it in the equation.
discount price = original price − discount
= 4,875 − 0.20 × 4,875
= 4,875 − 975
= 3,900
The discount price was ₹3,900.
Now find the commission. Write 9% as the decimal 0.09 before using it in the equation.
commission = commission percentage × sales
= 0.09 × 3,900
= 351
The commission was ₹351.
▶️ A store purchased a hammock for ₹8,310 and marked it up 100%. Brennan makes a 10% commission on all of his sales. How much commission did he make when he sold the hammock?
₹______
First find the price. Write 100% as the decimal 1.00 before using it in the equation.
price = cost + mark-up
= 8,310 + 1.00 × 8,310
= 8,310 + 8,310
= 16,620
The price was ₹16,620.
Now find the commission. Write 10% as the decimal 0.10 before using it in the equation.
commission = commission percentage × sales
= 0.10 × 16,620
= 1,662
The commission was ₹1,662.
▶️ A store bought a fancy watch at a cost of ₹2,536 and marked it up 150%. Addison, who works as a salesperson at the store, makes a 15% commission on all of her sales. Yesterday morning, Addison sold the watch. How much commission did she make from this sale?
₹______
First find the price. Write 150% as the decimal 1.50 before using it in the equation.
price = cost + mark-up
= 2,536 + 1.50 × 2,536
= 2,536 + 3,804
= 6,340
The price was ₹6,340.
Now find the commission. Write 15% as the decimal 0.15 before using it in the equation.
commission = commission percentage × sales
= 0.15 × 6,340
